Hi Substack!
I am trying something new in the hopes of driving preorders for my memoir. Preorder sales are SO HELPFUL in driving support for first-time authors like myself.
Marketing a memoir about motherhood and all of its beautiful forms in the current environment has been even harder and more complex than I anticipated.
But I know there are so many people across the world who have stories like mine and want to talk about the messy, wondrous experience that is motherhood.
A few weeks ago, I hosted a sneak peek reading and conversation at the home of Tara Abrahams, Head of Impact at The Meteor (definitely follow them!). It was such an exhilarating experience, and everyone shared a little bit about their own journey. At the end of the night I thought: I want to do this again, and often!
So, I’m offering a special preorder deal from now through April 15th:
Get a group of readers together to buy 10+ books collectively by April 15th. Preorders are a big metric of success for first-time authors like me, and you can do this on Kindle, Bookshop.org, your favorite local spot–wherever books are sold!
Submit the form linked here to begin the scheduling process.
We’ll be in touch to find a time that works for me and your group to meet virtually post-publication date, in late May or June.
I want to meet with groups of all kinds! Book clubs, writers’ groups, parenting groups—anyone who might connect with The Mother Code. I’m offering two versions of a virtual drop-in:
A guided 1 hour Q&A about the book (we will send a list of thought-starters beforehand to encourage conversation, but it can be as open-ended as you’d like).
An abridged (1 hour) version of my “Write Your Mother Code Story” mini-workshop, including a lesson and a writing exercise.
You can find all of the details linked here and I would absolutely love to make this happen with your people! Feel free to pass along to anyone you think might be interested.
XO,
Ruthie
Advance Praise for The Mother Code (May 6, 2025):
“Ackerman is frank and vulnerable, voicing taboo truths that many parents experience but few are courageous enough to admit."
KIRKUS REVIEWS
"The Mother Code subverts our ideas about parenting, womanhood, nature, and nurture. Ruthie Ackerman is that rare writer whose fierce intelligence is matched by her warmth and honesty. Her book brings us new ways of thinking about how to be a mother, and a person."
CLAIRE DEDERER, AUTHOR OF THE NATIONAL BESTSELLERS MONSTERS: A FAN’S DILEMMA AND POSER: MY LIFE IN TWENTY-THREE YOGA POSES
“Ackerman gives us the complexity of motherhood in all its devastating and devastatingly beautiful truth, layering her own harrowing story with laser-focused research and a chorus of mothers from literature and pop culture, all saying: you are not alone. You never have been."
